1. Village Rockstars | 2017
Dhunu is a 10-year-old village girl who dreams of buying a guitar. She befriends a bunch of other kids and they plan to form a rock band. However, Dhunu’s modest reality is in stark contrast to her dreams. So she saves every single penny in the hope that someday she can afford a guitar. But there’s more to the film. And you must watch it, we totally recommend it.
It was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language film at the 91st Academy Awards (Oscars) in 2019. However, Village Rockstars did not win at the Oscars. And, although it looks like it is based on a real story, it is not. Rima Das, who has written and directed it, once came across a bunch of kids playing a musical instrument (made of styrofoam) to a song playing on a radio. And, this idea inspired the story of Village Rockstars.

2.Bulbul Can Sing | 2018
In a remote Assamese village, Bulbul and her friends, Bonny and Somu, are exploring life. However, growing up in their patriarchal village puts pressure on them. Who they want to be and what society expects from them are completely different things. And amidst it all, Bulbul must find her voice and sing. It’s a coming-of-age story of love, loss, and learning. It is written, directed, and produced by Rima Das. Bulbul Can Sing won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese at 66th Indian National Film Awards.

3. Maj Rati Keteki | 2017
A renowned writer, Priyendu Hazarika, returns to a town where he started his writing journey. However, his experiences with the people are sweet and sour. The critics label his writing as merely performative and attention-seeking. The bone of contention is that Hazarika conveniently escapes the portrayal of regional issues that have plagued the society for long. But, more than that, the film is also about Hazarika’s journey inwards where he has to face his childhood traumas that shaped who he is today. He ultimately does face his truth.
The main protagonist, Adil Hussain won the National Film Award in the Special Jury Award / Special Mention (Feature Film) category.

4. III Smoking Barrels
It is a collective of three stories. Each depicting stories around the life stage of a person, namely: a child, a boy and a man. And all three are trapped in chaotic circumstances. All three stories come from the hinterland of Assam and are built on stories that directly impact the region: armed conflict, drug mafia, and elephant poaching.

5. Aamis (Ravening) | 2019
Aamis, also known as Ravening, is an Assamese romantic horror film. In the Assamese language, the word ‘Aamis’ means non-vegetarian. It is built on a highly obsessive love between adults who eat meat. Everything seems normal about Nirali and Suma’s relationship, except the fact that Nirali is married.
Society would not allow them to express their love openly or accept it. So, they accept their fate. However, in this case, love takes a darker expression, leading them deep into a pit full of sins they’ve committed.
The film is not a real story. It explores the themes of romantic obsession between the lead pair, taboo and social boundaries. You should watch the movie for its storyline, impeccable acting and overall theme.

7. Kanchanjangha | 2019
It is the story of Arniban. A young, rebellious man who believes in justice. He challenges the corrupt system and society and exposes the truth. The film also revolves around the APSC corruption in Assam which was finally exposed in 2017.
The film collected seven crore by the fifth week of its release. It went on to become the highest Assamese grosser. Its record was broken by Ratnakar which released a month after it.

8. Suspended Inspector Boro | 2018
Despite being an honest, no-nonsense officer, Inspector Boro has been suspended. The film has been directed by Local Kung Fu director, Kenny Basumatary. He thrashed a highly connected trafficker and hence suspended. And despite his suspension, he has been assigned the task of locating a missing woman. As he tries to locate her, he faces an uncomfortable truth, that some of the people in his department may have been involved in this case.

9. Joymoti | 1935
Joymoti is the first Assamese movie. The film’s premise is that King Borphukan got princess Joymoti killed. As she refused to help locate her husband, Gadapani. However, when people heard of her death they revolted against the cruel king.
Joymoti is based on real events that took place in princess Joymoti Konwari’s life. She was the wife of prince Gadapani. Royals of Sulikphaa Loraa Roja reign killed her because she refused to disclose the location of her exiled husband Gadapani in the Naga Hills. She is also often referred to as Sati as her sacrifice helped her husband rise in revolt and assume kingship. Joymoti is also the first talkie film in Assam. You can watch it on Youtube.

11. Roi Roi Binale | 2025
The title of the film translates to tears still flow. Roi Roi Binale is a musical drama on a blind man’s journey to find meaning in life. He is a struggling musician and whatever his sight has taken away from him, he fulfills the void with sound and music.
It became the highest grossing Assamese film of 2025. And, with a worldwide collection of ₹42 crore, it is the highest grossing Assamese film of all time. Within three days of its release the film collected ₹6.13 crore at the box office. Zubeen Garg and Mousumi Alifa are the lead pair of the film.

12. Bulu Film | 2022
No, you did not read it wrong. The theme of this film revolves around exactly that. When PK, Atul, and Prasanna run out of jobs post-pandemic, they desperately need money. And when nothing works out, they resort to making money by making porn. Do watch and let us know if you liked it or not.

13. Anur: Eyes on The Sun Shine | 2023
An elderly teacher’s life comes to a standstill when her husband passes away. Her struggles feel surreal. But, then it is also about dealing with loss and finding love again in old age. And although the film looks relatable, it is not based on a true story. The Assamese movie is an adaptation of a 2016 Tamil film, Theri.
It won the National Film Award in 2021 for the Best Assamese Film category.

14. Ratnakar | 2019

It is a martial arts comedy film. Charlie is the main protagonist in the film. He is just an ordinary guy with a delicate stomach. His friends add a lot of commotion to his life.
